Daylilies Hybridized by Daylily Breeders

Dr Joseph Barth & Son Nicholas

Tranquil Lake Nursery first introduced Marguery and Wiscasset, two of Dr. Joseph Barth daylilies in 1975.  Two years later his Pemaquid Light and Blue Blood were introduced and the nursery has introduced dozens of daylilies since then.  Dr. Barth was a pioneer hybridizer of tetraploid daylilies and his breeding lines have a high level of quality producing daylilies known for their garden vigor, hardiness and beauty.  The hardiness is due to the location of Dr. Barth's garden along the mid-coast of Maine in Alna, Maine. During the winter of 1980-1981 those daylilies were put to the test when it reached a record of 42 degrees below zero.  Many of his varieties are named for the region of Maine where he lived. Two of his varieties were named for the last historically significant Native American Tribe in the Wiscasset region of Maine, the Wawenock are a sub-tribe of the Abnaki people.  Abnakis was introduced in 1979 and Wawenock in 1996.

The Reverend Dr. Barth died in 1988.  His plant creations are a unique legacy which will continue to serve as a reminder of a fine and generous man.  We are grateful to Dr. Barth for giving us so much beauty, both from the garden and through his giving nature, ready smile, energy and enduring spirit.

Dr Barth's legacy of exceptional daylilies lives on in his past hybrids and in new gems that his son Nick along with his wife Sandy have developed working with the many fine remnants in his daylily garden.  They are working on a line of reds and also focused on northern breed, high performing daylilies

The daylilies  that are listed below are in good supply. We have smaller numbers of a few of these Barth Daylilies and they will be offered in future years. We ship healthy double-fan divisions or clumps (4-5 fans), unless other-wise indicated. Occasionally, low stock varieties and some new introductions will be shipped as single fans. Our guarantee still applies.
