Spend an educational and fun
filled day at Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth, Massachusetts on Saturday,
October 4th from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Learn new techniques that will
help you to hone your gardening skills and improve the look and care of your own garden.
We have invited a variety of speakers and exhibitors to share their knowledge and tools of
the trade with you through workshops, hands-on activities, garden talks and demonstrations
related to the Theme: Facilitating the Mixed Border.
Learn how and when to
divide perennials, prune shrubs, propagate tender perennials, harvest and dry
herbs and put the garden to bed for the winter. Experience the fine art of stone
paving, add a water feature and make hypertufa troughs and other containers.
There will also be workshops on perennials and shrubs for fall and winter
interest, planting for spring color and spring bulbs.
Plan to spend the whole
day and learn how to improve the look of your garden this autumn, while you also
get ready for the winter ahead and the spring to follow. You will also have the
opportunity to wander among the gardens at Tranquil Lake Nursery, where you will
see a diverse variety of perennials, grasses, shrubs and vines with late season
interest. The gardens include a number of perennial borders, mixed perennial and
shrub gardens, an ornamental vegetable garden, a thyme bench, container herb
garden, an entry garden, an ornamental grass garden, a pond-side water garden, a
bog garden, a dry-scree garden and more.
The nursery also has more
than 10 acres of daylilies and Siberian and Japanese Iris in the field. Some of the late
blooming daylilies will still be in bloom at the end of September. Tranquil Lake Nursery
offers a diverse selection of perennials, herbs, shrubs, grasses and tender perennials.

Workshops and
Demonstration Schedule
10:00 a.m.
Constructing A
Rain Garden
At 10:00
a.m., Warren Leach, landscape designer and co-owner of Tranquil Lake
Nursery and Landscape Crew members, Tom Driscoll and Craig
Wheeler will offer a how-to garden demonstration on "Constructing a
Rain Garden." They will demonstrate simple construction techniques for
capturing and directing rainfall that will sustain a new garden. Learn how to
utilize your watershed, whether it is runoff from the surface of your lawn,
driveway or roof. Water can be saved and returned to the environment, while
being used by ornamental plantings.

Creating an Entry Garden Filled with Shrubs, Perennials, Pots & More
Warren
Leach, landscape designer and co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery will
offer planting and design suggestions in "Creating an Entry Garden
filled with Shrubs, Perennials, Pots and More" . He will
highlight plants with for colorful flowers, fragrance and year-round
ornamental value, emphasizing their cultural needs and presenting design
ideas for installing them with an artistic eye, creating sensational entry
garden.

Stone Wall & Stone Seat Construction
Join
the Tranquil Lake Nursery Landscape Crew will show you how to build a
stone sitting wall, locating it neat the new rain garden. Learn stone wall
building techniques and concrete casting in their demonstration "Stone
Wall & Seat Construction." This workshop will be on-going
throughout the day.

a.m. Propagating
and Overwintering Tender Perennials and Annuals
Gilbert
Moore has been
gardening at his home in Slatersville, Rhode Island for nearly half a century.
He will walk you through the gardens at Tranquil Lake Nursery offering tips for
over-wintering annuals and tender perennials, as he shows you how to take
cuttings and bring plants indoors, during his demonstration "Propagating
and Saving Tender Perennials and Annuals." Participants
will have the opportunity to take their own cuttings to root at home.

Favorite Late
Season Daylilies at Tranquil Lake Nursery
With ten
acres of daylilies at peak bloom, the daylily flowers are always a hit at
Tranquil Lake Nursery, where the fields and gardens feature more than 3,600
varieties that bloom from May to frost. Tranquil Lake Nursery co-owner Philip
Boucher will share his love and knowledge of these special flowers in "Favorite
Late Season Daylilies at Tranquil Lake Nursery." Learn about the many
assets and characteristics of these beautiful and diverse summer garden
essential and meet some of Phil’s favorites for the late season. You are sure
to meet a daylily or two that you must have for your own.

p.m. Designing
and Creating Garden Mosaics
Debora
Aldo, landscape
designer, horticulturist and principal of Pietre Dure Design in
Connecticut will showcase materials and demonstrate techniques in "Designing
and Creating Garden Mosaics." Deb designed a paved dragonfly mosaic of
glass at the nursery several years ago, which is very popular with the many
visitors to our Silver garden. She will show you how to create your own mosaic
as she creates a new design in one of the gardens at the nursery.

p.m. Favorite
Succulents for the Sunny Window
Succulents
are wonder plants that can withstand bright sunlight, with little supplemental
watering in the garden. They are also ideal plants for the sunny window in the
office or at home, that adapt well to a variety of temperatures with little
care. Debi Hogan has been collecting succulents for twenty years. She
will discuss how to select and grow "Favorite Succulents for the Sunny
Window" She will share the many reasons she admires members of the
Echeveria, Agave, Aloe, Euphorbia, Sanseveria and more.

Combining
Perennials, Shrubs, Vines and Groundcovers in the Mixed Border
Warren
Leach, garden
designer and co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery will offer a garden talk on
"Combining Perennials, Shrubs, Vines and Ground Covers in the Mixed
Border." Warren will focus on plant combinations that have beauty all
year. Learn how to combine flowers, fall foliage and colorful twigs and fruits
to brighten your landscape.

Propagating
and Overwintering Tender Perennials and Annuals
Gilbert
Moore will
repeat his popular garden talk and demonstration "Propagating and Saving
Tender Perennials and Annuals. Walk through the nursery gardens, learn tips
for overwintering and take some cuttings to root at home.
2:30
p.m. Planting
the Rain Garden
Warren Leach,
horticulturists and co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery will offer a demonstration
on the techniques for "Planting the Rain Garden." He will
demonstrate digging in soil amendments, preparing the planting bed and planting
perennials and woody ornamental. The end result will be a new mixed border
display garden, water and all. Warren will move to "Planting Sedums &
Succulents in the Wall’.

Dividing
Perennials and Other Fall Chores and Garden Tasks to Prepare for Winter
The day will as Philip
Boucher, co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery will take you step-by-step
through the techniques for "Dividing Perennials and Other Fall Chores
and Garden tasks to Prepare for Winter." This is a terrific opportunity
to increase the number of plants in your garden while also improving the vigor
and bloom of your plants, as you learn how to divide established clumps of Hosta,
Iris, daylilies and many other perennials. Then learn some fall gardening
practices for good garden hygiene, pest control, culture and beauty. You will
learn what to cut back and when, how to compost, what plants to leave standing
for winter interest, mulching and more. You will also learn how to prune, which
plants to protect from winter cold, how to overwinter containers and clean up
the garden for winter.
